For many people, even those born to the tongue, writing proper, coherent and lively English is a Sisyphean task: it's like rolling language up an endless hill. In a confrontation with grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax and the dictionary, you often feel helpless and hopeless: you can never get it right, never say exactly what you mean -- although sometimes a great deal depends upon it.
